The beginner's guide covers the general pour. This one goes deeper on soy wax specifically, because soy behaves differently enough from paraffin and gel that a few soy-only quirks — frosting, cure time, fragrance load — trip up almost every first-timer who switches to it.
Why soy behaves differently
Soy wax melts at a lower temperature than paraffin and is more sensitive to how it's cooled. That's part of why it's the easier wax to work with at home — but it also means a couple of steps that don't matter much with paraffin (cure time, cooling speed) matter a lot here.
What you'll need
- Soy wax — plan on roughly the same volume of melted wax as your container's fluid capacity, plus a little extra for topping up after the first set (soy commonly leaves a slight dip in the centre).
- A heat-safe jar — see our jars and containers if you don't have one yet.
- A wick sized to your jar's diameter, kept upright with a wick holder while the wax sets.
- A wax heater or double-boiler setup — soy scorches easily over direct heat.
- A pen thermometer. This one isn't optional for soy — see Step 2.
Step 1: Melt slowly
Melt the soy wax in your wax heater over low, steady heat, stirring occasionally. Don't rush this — scorched soy wax discolours and can affect scent throw later.
Step 2: Watch the temperature closely
Soy wax has a narrower working range than paraffin. Check your specific wax's packaging for its exact pour temperature, but as a general guide: add fragrance a little after the wax has fully melted and cooled slightly, then pour a few degrees lower still. Pouring too hot is the single biggest cause of the sunken, cratered tops that make people think they've done something wrong — they usually haven't; the wax was just too warm going in.
Step 3: Centre the wick before you pour
Fix your wick to the base of the jar and use a wick holder to hold it centred and vertical across the top. Soy wax's slower, cooler set gives the wick more time to drift off-centre if it isn't held in place, so don't skip this even for a quick pour.
Step 4: Pour, then leave it alone
Pour steadily, keeping the wick centred. Then — and this is the soy-specific part — let it cool at a stable room temperature, away from drafts, air conditioning vents, or direct sun. Soy wax cooled unevenly is what causes wet spots (patchy, translucent marks on the sides of the jar) and rippled tops.
Step 5: Cure before you burn it
This is the step most beginners skip and the one that matters most for soy specifically. Let the candle sit, unburned, for 3 to 7 days after pouring. Soy wax needs this time for the fragrance oil to bind properly into the wax structure — burning it too early gives a noticeably weaker scent throw, even if the candle looks perfectly set.
About that white, frosty film
If you see a light, crystalline white coating on the surface or sides of a soy candle, that's frosting — a natural characteristic of soy wax recrystallising, not a flaw or a failed batch. It's more visible in soy than in paraffin precisely because soy is a more natural, less processed wax. It doesn't affect burn quality or scent.
Once a batch or two of soy candles has gone right, the temperature ranges and cure-time patience become automatic. From there, the only real variable left is which jar to pour it into.
